Kaleidoscope

After taking an intro machining course over the summer at Amherst College, I knew I had to go back for more. The head machinist, Jim Kubasek, took me under his wing.

This kaleidoscope was primarily designed by Jim as a passion project. We worked through each part of the kaleidoscope as he taught me SolidWorks, CNC programming, and more advanced manual skills such as cutting manual threads on a lathe (internal, left-handed threads no less!).

With his mentorship, I produced two kaleidoscopes — one of which still lives in the Amherst College machine shop!
